COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
WHEELBARROWS, GENERAL UTILITY
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description in preference to type I, classes I and III,
styles A and B of Federal Specification KKK-W-291.
This description covers general utility wheelbarrows of small or large capacity, as specified. This description does not cover all types, classes, grades, or sizes of the commodity indicated by the title, or those which are commercially available, but is intended to cover the types normally procured to meet Federal requirements.
Salient characteristics:
Capacity, (as specified)= Small capacity 3.5 cubic feet minimum heaped capacity; Large capacity 3.0 cubic feet minimum heaped capacity.
Tray materials- Small capacity formed from minimum 17 gauge (0.0538 inch nominal) sheet; Large capacity formed from minimum 16 gauge (0.0598 inch nominal) sheet steel.
Top edge of trap- Reinforced either by beading or rolling.
Frame and handles- Tubular steel or hardwood, (as specified).
Legs- Fabricated from steel channel or tubing, (as specified).
Wheel assembly- Pneumatic, semi-pneumatic, or all steel wheels, (as specified). Small capacity minimum 16 inch diameter tire. Large capacity minimum 16 inch diameter tire.
Durability test- Wheelbarrows shall show no signs of permanent deformation or failure of any part when tested as follows: Fill tray heaped with dry sand and maintain throughout the following tests. Roll wheelbarrow of a 4-to-6-inch high raised platform onto a level concrete surface at a speed of 3 to 5 mph and repeat for a total of 10 times. Lift wheelbarrow as in nominal usage so that bottom of legs are raised to a height of 4-to-6-inches and drop so that the legs strike a level concrete surface and repeat for a total of 10 times.
Workmanship. The finished wheelbarrow shall be free from burrs, sharp edges, rust or corrosion which may affect safety and serviceability.
Regulatory requirements. The offeror/contractor is encouraged to use recovered materials in accordance with Public Law 94-580 to the maximum extent practicable.
Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking. The preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.
Notes: Purchaser should specify types of legs and type of wheel in contract or ordering documents.
